Zoah's identity: Guardia's last defender?
« on: May 06, 2010, 04:28:45 am »
Odinswarriordwarf sent in a great theory by e-mail. Going off the Ultimania interview's statement that Zoah was supposed to be a prince from a foreign land, it states that Zoah is the last defender of Guardia and a member of the royalty; that the scar across his chest comes from fighting with Dalton, as would battle scars to his face that he hides with the helmet. Again, Zoah's backstory seems to have been eviscerated before the game's release, but this is still a fun theory!

Indeed, this would be awesome. However, we should also take into consideration Zoah's age. In the events of Chrono Cross (1020 A.D.), Zoah is 28; the fall of Guardia occured in 1005 A.D. This would mean Zoah would be 13 at the time. It doesn't throw out the possibility that he was involved, just something to think about. Also consider (though it's probably insignificant) that we have never witnessed Dalton wielding a sword (excluding the FMV; and not to say he wasn't above such a thing); he always preferred Magic or his Golems.

He could have been involved in the fighting despite being quite young--a 13-year-old who had some training and was big for his age might easily have found himself being treated as an adult when Guardia started running out of soldiers. And a resistance movement of some sort might have continued to exist for years after the end of the actual conquest. He might also have lost family or friends, and be looking for revenge, even if he wasn't able to participate in the actual fighting...

Hmmm. There's a fanfic in that, I think. Let's see, now...

The Porrean general looked up from his paperwork as he heard the sound of something crashing against the door. As the noise came again, he began to scrabble at the underside of his desk, seeking the latch the would open the secret passageway in the far wall and permit him to escape his office without passing through the noisy corridor.

He never found it.

There was a third crash, and the door fell from its frame. A huge man stepped into the office, treading carefully over the splintered wood. He wore nothing but a loincloth and a helmet, so the general could see that his muscular limbs were slick with the sweat of recent exertion. In his hand, the giant held a naked sword, with blood dripping from the tip of the blade. The helmet turned as though its owner were scanning the room for...something.

"W-who are you?" the general quavered, shrinking back into his desk chair.

The half-naked man froze in the act of raising his sword to strike the general down, and words issued from under the helmet:

"HELLO, MY NAME IS ZOAH MONTOYA. YOU KILL MY FATHER. PREPARE TO DIE."

sword
It would be more awesome if he fights bare-handed, crushes the general's head with his big hands like Anji from Rurouni Kenshin did to his foe.

What if Zoah is actually a prince of Guardia? Whatever Dalton did while screwing around with the time stream could have created a little brother for Marle. Zoah would have been eight during the events of Chrono Trigger. If we place Marle’s age around sixteen to eighteen, she might have been young enough for Aliza to have had another child before passing on. I find that unlikely, though. It could be that the changes to the timeline included the king remarrying and having another child. Maybe the king’s new wife was even a spy from Porre working for Dalton, which is why the forces from Porre were able to gain access to the castle and defeat Guardia. The scar could have come about by someone trying to kill the heirs to the throne. No evidence, but damn is speculation fun.

As a random aside, assuming that the Chronoverse is supposed to represent a realistic world, it isn't that far to assume that Guardia has a nobility class as well. Zoah could then be a "prince" from Guardia but not directly in the line of succession. If King Guardia had a brother, for example, and that brother had a son, then he might might be a "prince" (depending on how politics there worked).

Of course, Zoah could also be from Choras's royal line (as the castle there seems to indicate that they indeed had royalty at one point or another).

That’s a good point. And Marle did mention when her mother was dying that a lot of people were around. I’m sure some of those were relatives which would be royalty or nobility. As Chrono Cross showed us, the world is a much larger place that it appeared in Chrono Trigger and with a lot more political figures that assumed. Porre political and military situation alone was a big surprise. Choras could have a government-in-exile. I remember hearing that it was originally intended that Guardia and Choras would be at war before they decided to go with the Mystics; who’s to say that there wasn’t conflict with Choras that caused the royals to leave their country and set up elsewhere. Choras is also awfully close to the Mystic continent.

I can't remember if I've posted something similar to this, but here goes.

In the Ultimania review, this is said: "Zoah's role was to be that of the prince of a certain country, secretly watching over the protagonists' doings from the beginning. If you had chosen the forest route (Slash Route) when it came time to infiltrate the Viper Room, you ought to have been able to see an event shedding light on Zoah's true identity."

So I took to transcribing some of the Japanese text during that event, and something caught my eye:
ほう... おまえは, セルジュ. おもしろい.

If I'm correct, Zoah is saying "You're better, Serge. Interesting." This is interesting, as it suggests 1) he already knows Serge (recall in the English script he says "So... You are Serge." as if it's the first time); and 2) he knew him from when he was injured (perhaps the panther bite?). Zoah could just be reacting similarly to Karsh, but the context suggests otherwise.

What's your take on this?

Ah, thanks GlitterBerri. I use Google to translate, so...most things do not come out right.

I wonder, then, what the Ultimania review was talking about?

I thought it was possible that Karsh told Zoah that he beat Serge up or something along those lines after his own defeat so that Zoah was surprised that Serge was seemingly unhurt...but I don't recall what Karsh says (or if he says anything to anyone) about his failure to capture Serge at all...

Maybe the shaker brothers told him.
And since Karsh failed to capture Serge, shouldn't him report the situation to Lynx or Viper(it seems Viper didn't know) if he was assigned to the mission?

It appears that Zoah is the only resident of Viper Manor who owns a cat. Could this be important? Of course, Serge has like, 3 cats, so I can't exactly see how. More random info, I guess.
