Full Names
« on: November 10, 2010, 04:06:11 pm »
So, we know the full names of several Chrono characters, either by direct reference or by implication.

However, some characters do not have full names, and in this case (like King Zeal) fans have stepped up to the plate and "named" some of them. So this thread is about consistently used, fan-designated character names. This would be used to create a cohesive, compatible FANON universe where the same people aren't renamed from one project to another.

For example, I've seen Chrono Anrui, and I've seen Chrono Lantree. I prefer Lantree and

I've seen Queen Elena Zeal, and I've seen Queen Simaele Zeal.

I'd like to propose that Glenn's last name should be Alabaster. No particular reason, but I feel the name goes with the time period and has a nice ring. In my pet project, I've been referring to Dalton as Dalton Huxley, after Aldous Huxley, but again, not for a particular reason.

What says ye, Compendium?

I wonder why Lucca is the only character with an official full name n__n Emm, ¿Robo Y-66? ¿Toma González? I always felt he was kinda "spanished".

Glenn Alabastar does have a nice ring to it.  I prefer Simaele Zeal over Elena Zeal because Simaele has a mystical, otherworldly quality, whereas Elena (while it is a pretty name) sounds too..."Earthish", I guess.  I'd feel the same way if someone proposed, say, Janet Zeal.  Too Earthish.  Does that make sense?

I wonder why Lucca is the only character with an official full name

Because Lucca is awesome.

¿Toma González? I always felt he was kinda "spanished".

It's the conquistador mustache.

Well, there's also Nadia "Marle" Guardia, Schala Zeal, Janus "Magus" Zeal, I always figured Ayla was like Madonna or Bono, no last name required. Robo's more interesting, because they do call him Prometheus like that's his computer's name on the network, and they refer to his model R66-Y which is to me like his IP address. I'd say his full name (including nickname) is Prometheus "Robo" R66-Y, which doesn't exactly roll right off the tongue.

Is Toma's last name Gonzalez? I just remember that character seeming much cooler when I was a kid than he turned out to be when I got older. He seemed like the type of guy who, in a more conventional RPG of the time, would have been featured as a main character, and probably would have included Tata in the party for that matter. And oh my god when I first saw Toma's official art that mustache made me fall out of my chair. Instant downgrade!

I always thought "Ashtear" was kind of an odd name to retcon in. At least it's official! :-)

And yeah, Saj, I get what you're saying. Simaele does have a nice, non-specific oriental or foreign sound to it. It was PSZ's idea, I believe.

¿Isn´t Nadia a false name/nickname or whatever 0__o?

Prometheus "Robo" R66-Y... Lucca would say "Cool!" xD

Gonzalez sounds really godd for Toma, yeah, the first time i played i thought he was younger... at least the moustache makes him seem older :3

I do love Ashtear xD It is kinda cool to say "Lucca Ashtear" instead of saying "Crono", just "Crono".

Nah, Nadia is her real name, Marle was the nickname, and I think in the Japanese version sometimes it would add "dia" to the end of whatever you name her, so I guess she could be called Marledia? I don't remember where I heard/read that, but it sounds pretty bad in English. Haha.

Too Earthish.
Yeah, this is what always captivated me about Schala. Had her name been left as "Sara" in the translation, I probably wouldn't have joined her character's wide fan cult. There's a lot to be said about the otherworldly-ness of a character's name, and how it contributes to creating an iconic character. What gets me is the question of whether character names can be too otherworldly, especially in numbers. Like, when we get to the point that Neytiri's talking to Eywa, I wonder whether the audience is just going to be weirded out. I'm not sure what the proper balance is.

Marle: Crono why are you letting our castle burn down?
Crono: As of now, Crono McTrigger no longer exists. Say hello to Miguel Sanchez!

Also Toma's last name is Levine, they actually have it in the game.

Levine! Much better than reusing Gato's pre-localized name. Thanks, mag!

Which would make Toma Jewish instead of Spanish.  Nice.

I like the idea of a central fan-name repository, B-Man

Crono Kicasso seems the logical choice. He's Spanish, didn't you know? Also, didn't King Zeal get a cool fan name that I am totally blanking on?

Anywho, here are two lists. One for those who have names (or don't really seem to need fan names, or have fairly well established fan names) and one for those who are lacking. Faustwolf, don't you have a repository of at least some fan names somewhere? I am almost positive I've seen one for Glenn, for example. Maybe Flea, too. Anywho

Lavothamule "Lavos" Wifflebottom Esq.

 Best one!

I'm not sure Masa, Mune, or Doreen would have last names, or Azala.

But it's a great list. Very thorough.

Demeria is being tossed around for Queen Zeal's first name, it seems.

I wish more people thought this topic was worth discussing... oh well.

I believe that "Demeria" (and "Alphard" for King Zeal) ultimately come from a fanfic widely accepted as pseudo-canon around here. Personally, I don't think they're any more valid than any other fan-generated names, and it grates on me a bit when they're used with the assumption that of course everyone accepts those names and knows who they're referring to. It's reached the point of being a pet peeve with me. ;P

Do we know that Taban is an Ashtear? The family tree gets pretty big over eight generations. I bet he's a Peppergrinder.

I like Lavos' name!

Alfador is right about the canon issue. But it's all in fun. I think Queen Zeal's first name should be Peal and her husband's should be Real Deal. Gato's first name is clearly Mister. Frog has a last name: Wilkinson. Ozzie's last name is Pants and Flea's is Vest. The Chancellor's first name is Biff (and his last name is Chancellor).

The best name of all, though, goes to Alfador (the cat, not the forumer): Steve.
