Yay
Fantasia. When I watched it again, with Disney's commentary, it was pretty clear to me that this was a bold attempt at his to create something that was unquestionably
art, irrespective of market potential (though he wanted to create many more
Fantasias, apparently). He certainly succeeded, dancing hippos and ostriches included.
Maleficent as a
pedophilic lesbian makes that argument somewhat less interesting, ha. She is definitely something of a lackluster villain for most of the movie, but the dragon scene overshadows that because it's so brilliantly animated, I think.
(Personally, I prefer Tchaikovsky's
Sleeping Beauty, with Cabrosse as an evil faerie -- she's much more playfully wicked.)
Also, Frollo's the freaking scariest out of all of the Disney villains. It's not often you see one of them that's willing to burn a city down. I don't think having Tony Jay do the voiceover helped that much, but it's mostly how real he seems compared to someone like Jafar or Grimhilde.
Hell yeah, Frollo is scary! I remember listening to "Hellfire" way back in the day and being like "wait... what... this is really epic and frightening and... why are you letting me watch this, mom? He's talking about raping and killing her... >_>"
