So Marle and Crono'll go through it and ensure salvation for the planet.

Why Crono?

What do you mean by when? I'll try and clear things up for you.

In the original timeline the only gates made are the black gates that take the Gurus and Janus away, and the gate that sends Kino to 65,000,000 B.C. As for the creator of the gates it could have been Lavos or the Entity, it doesn't matter which. So anyways Lavos goes ape and busts up the planet. When the planet is on its last legs it trys to fix the problem that is Lavos.

It frantically searches throught its entire history looking for anything that can be helpful.
1000 AD: Looky here, this teenager Crono, he definietely has the potential, and the ability to use magic. Oh look! That girl he is with also has the magic ability. What the hell? His other friend has the ability too! This is too good to be true.

600 AD: Hmm that Frog character is one of the best swordsman on the planet. And he also has the ability! He also is able to wield that legendary sword that is tied into Lavos... What? That boy that dissapeared from 12,000 ended up here? Wow he has awesome magical power, and has a personal vendetta against Lavos. This is getting easier by the second.

2300 AD: Hmm this robot has a very unusual human like aura. Almost as if it can feel emotions. This is right about when the human race dies off also, and that old man was sent here through the gate. A very important time indeed.

65,000,000 BC: Amazing, that woman Ayla has awesome strength, super human almost. This period is when Lavos landed also, maybe it is at its weakest at this time?

The Entity then concocted its scheme to get the seven chosen together to fight Lavos. As soon as it had its plan set it struck into action. It went back to the point where marle entered the telepod and made a gate, covering it by making the witnesses think that the telepod and Marle's Pendant caused the incident.

You have to see the entity as having the ability to watch all of time from one place. Like a computer with all the files being the events that transpired on the planet. The Entity can not do much physically, but it can make gates, and has some control over the DBT. Hope thaty cleared things up.

I think if it wasn't Crono, it wouldn't have turned into this whole trip on saving the world,  well... actually, its Crono and Marle's fault.  Marle dropped her pendant forcing Crono to hang with her at the fair.  Marle just wanted to escape the formal life, and later at the fair, she was lost in the time warp thing.  Now this is where the decision was made.  Crono either was drawn to her energy or out of the kindness of his heart went to rescue her.  But it's much more than that.  It's a love story.

I think it's a story w/love elements myself...

Also, I was aware that Crono overslept in the original timeline, but was confused because you guys were making things too complex by saying that the Entity was controlling when Crono woke up or not...SilentMartyr's right, Occams Razor...The Entity made the gates. Simplest and makes the most sense based on the evidence we already have.

Now, I don't know if it's all as laid out as Martyr states later...I think that the Entity saw that it could have a gate open right then & there because of the Pendant would react w/Lucca's Telepod...It connected and made other gates so that Crono & Co would see the various parts of it's life so that they could save it by destroying Lavos...Maybe it planned out for the other party members to join them...But, really, everyone has the ability to use magic, it just has to be unlocked (ala Spekkio for Crono & Co.).

Yeah, everyone has the potiential to use magic, it just has to be unlocked by Spekkio.  I'm not sure why the entity choose Crono, but then agian, we could question 'Why is X the main character of game Y" for almost every game.

For some games it is the main character that chooses to do what he does.

For others it is their "destiny"

on an humourous note :

Crono is being forced by the entity to save the world here's some example

When I was playing a cute girl stumble unto me she ask to join I say : no, so she's begging me I had no choice but to say yes, then she bug me for candy and all when I go try lUcca,s telepod she get teleported what a relief I will finally can sell the pendant to the sword seller, I take the pendant, suddenly Lucca begin to talk and sent my in the gate WTF!

and

We watch the video that play right in front of our eyes, it's cool it's futuristit, LOL the earth get destroy by a big spiky haired monster I like spiky haired monster. ahaha hillarious I should save it on a disk. Then the stupid princess ask me if I wanna save the futur, hell no it was hilarious, but she kept bugging me I didn't the time to save this funny video

Thos etwo are claerly example of the entity forcing Crono, the chosen one to act

those thing are in the game *but* the main Character may think differently depending if you're sadistic or not

Or maybe Crono just says no and Marle & Lucca are forced to do the rest of the game by themselves...Man, that'd be an awesome hack to mess around w/like...Would Ayla still befriend them? And you'd only have two (exceptionally weak) characters in those beginning parts before you get Robo...

You couldn't do the jet bike race, someone else would die when fighting Lavos, Lucca would be sent to jail to try to abduct Marle.

Hey did anyone knew that if you waited long enough in the jail Lucca came and saved Crono jsut before he get killed (read that somewhere)?

True, Marle does seem to force Crono to do alot of stuff, but its more of an emotional attachment between them because he could (well...i dunno because he doesnt seem to speak) "Eff it i'm not doing chores for this biddy anymore." I've come to the conclusion that it is A LOVE STORY.  part adventure, part role-play...

Yes, I think thats an easyer way to do.  Lucca kills everything on her way in, so easy excape till the Dragon Tank.

And even though you are given choices there, the developers want you to say the heroic thing.  Doesn't have anything to do with the entity forcing Crono.
