A question about the Chrono Cross

Hmm, something I've been wondering about for a while. You can forge the Chrono Cross in Divine Dragon Falls as early as you defeat FATE. In New Game+, can you use it to split the TD before defeating the Dragon God\TimeDevourer atop TT, and if so, what ending do you get?

If you use the Chrono Cross on the TD you always get the same ending, if I remember correctly.
