In that novel, they had developed a drug that produced dreamlike travels, and had no side effects, except that it shortened the life down to 60 years. And also, technology had made possible that the working day lasted virtually nothing. Still, government had de-technologized companies so people would still have to work 6 hours a day: they had made an experiment where cutting down the labour day to 3 hours only produced an increase in the demand of that drug, but no increase on people's satisfaction.
