The amount of lobbying from the media industries dwarfs that of the tech industries, and the conservative bent of Congress (even among Democrats) makes it very likely that something nasty will pass, and I have no confidence that President Obama would veto whatever does pass. The only question therefore is how nasty the final version of the bill will be.
There is a possibility that Congress won't be able to pass the legislation by year's end, which would require it to start over next year, so our best hope is probably that Congress run out the clock.
But those of you who are suggesting that this won't be a very serious blow to freedom on the Internet are mistaken. Unless SOPA and PIPA are significantly changed, they will be, and the threat to this website is very real in the event the bills pass in their present form.
