While I agree in terms of Lucca -- I think Lucca's hair color was natural -- there's plenty of room to say that the Zealians' hair was dyed.

First, if I remember right, all Zealians had the blue hair going on.  A little too consistent to be natural.  And if it WAS natural, the Earthbound Ones would have had some blue hair as well...at least SOMEONE.  But nope, all the Earthbound Ones were brown-haired.

Also, who cares whether Schala would "want" to be different or not?  Though she has strong moral convictions, she bends to the wills of others easily.  (We know this pretty well from when she wouldn't stand up to her mother in anything but semi-harsh words.)  I can imagine the following conversation:

Zeal: "Schala, go dye your hair already!  I can see some blonde in your roots there."
Schala: "Mother, why must we dye our hair?  The only difference between us and the Earthbound Ones is that we can use magic and they cannot..."
Zeal: "Are you going to let your hair grow blonde then?  You would shame our family by going out in public with the hair of an Earthbound One!  If that's what you plan to do, I'll just have to cast you down with them!"
Schala: *sigh* "Alright, mother, I'll go dye my hair..."

Anyway, I'm tired, and people are chatting my ears off.  This post is done. =P

Stop Spamming to get your post count up >.>

Anyway at Jake-A-Roonie:

1. The Earthbound one's hair may be brown because they dyed it brown :P But the most likely answer would be that they have never washed it, and it's dirt.

Secondly, Only a few of the Englightened women had the blue hair, but because they did, I looked at the back of the sprite and realised that it's connected to their hats. It's not their hair. More like a wig stuck to their hat.

Thirdly, If it was dye and her clothes were dyed too..... HOW THE HELL CAN CLOTHES LOSE DYE!? O yeah, Lavos sucking her life would do so?
Most people in this debate are forgetting 2 important things. Fanfics are not good to believe when Game evidance points otherwise, and the fact that Schala's hair has not only grown longer but the fact that her skin is paler and that her eyes have lost colour too...

There was a blue haired woman in 600AD who has blue hair, and so does her son, whilst her daughter has brown hair, and the grandpa has white hair. Remember, Akira Toriyama is a part of the Dream team. In all of his animes, everyone has weird coloured hair, and it is always natural. I wouldn't doubt that when he made the consept drawing and the sprite design, he ment them to be natural...

"Our ancestors were warped to this rotten dimension several thousand years ago. We Dragonians have learned to adapt to this planet, though it is defilled. Whilst living here, we have discovered the techniques of dying our hair blue using the power of Lavos, and by interbreeding with the humans, we have genetically changed their hair colour"

*Serge looks at his hair colour*
Serge:" OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

In fact, perhaps liquids on her cage\dome (And I'm SURE I can see some liquids under her legs when I fight the TD) made the paint get off the the clothes.

Yawn. I will repeat this once and only once... The whole dying thing is bull shit. Sustaining it with magic may be a possibility, but the whole dying this is utter fu*king rubbish. I swear, I will always go defensive if anyone makes Schala look bad.. She is my all time favourite NPC.... Hope in CT:CE you guys make her look good ^.^; Or someone is gona die....

Now heres the picture: As you can see, it is a part of Lavos. It is glowing... It's even under Lavos on his tentacles... I don't think Dye can climb up a shell... Avoid the side of a shell but still get to underneathe... Besides the point that Lavos is huge in that picture and clothes and hair dye would 1) be powder and not a liquid and 2) It wouldn't be from those clothes because they are not the same as Schala wore.

Like my philosophy is, It's better to tackle everything at one time than seperatly. You can't say that Lavos simply sucked her life and it only took away her eye colour, when in fact what he did passed onto to her genes and Kid inherited it. She has blue/grey eyes just like Schala.[/img]

As it was pointed out before, that's Schala's underwear, what she is wearing in the TD.

What is exactly what you don't like about the dying thing? I mean, it is the easiest explanation to the question: "Schala in Zeal has purple hair, and in TD (or even Kid) she is blonde: what has happened?". It is much simpler than any kind of pigmentation/energy draining, since those are process we know nothing about, while about dying, we know a lot.

He doesn't like how it makes Schala an accessory to the arrogant policies of the Zeal Court and royal family. Yet, I think he seems to forget, Schala has complicity, or at least not enough strength and moral fortitude, to openly disobey her mother. She could have refused to activate the Mammon Machine, and Lavos would not have been summoned. Her weakness in not disobeying the Queen her mother doomed her land, for she only needed refuse: her life for her people. But for whatever reason, she did not. This either makes her coward, or not fully against the aims and goals of the family - following her mother's lead while still bearing sympathy for her victims. She was not that old, after all, and was just a young girl caught amidst a very trying time, and likely found it very difficult to choose sides, or right and wrong.

Now, the fact of the matter is, ancient people could well have had dye. Dye is obtained from seashells, or ground rocks, or any number of other places that are easy to find. Some, like Purple, were far more valuable, but dye is still an extremely ancient invention. For a kindom that has flying machines advanced beyond that even of Crono's time, dye is not a great leap.

Now, personally, I prefer the dye solution immensely, for two reasons. Firstly, such adornment as a status symbol is quite interesting: sort of like the way the pharaohs of Egypt always wore their beards in that certain way, and wore the double crown, and bore the crook and flail as symbols of leadership and the like. For the royalty of old Zeal to mark themselves in a certain manner is simply following the mould of ancient societies. The second reason is simply this: multi-coloured hair is just over-wrought and silly, and cannot be taken seriously, which I prefer to do so far as Zeal is concerned. I mean, to you really think that Zeal was only so big as it shows? Surely there were far more people, else it was smaller even than the first walled-cities of mankind, smaller than ancient Jericho and Catal Huyuk. Each of those had in the thousands, even tens of thousands. Zeal by its level of advancement must at least have the numbers of Uruk or Babylon. How did they supress all other peoples? Surely, they have magic, but if magic is unique to them, it is likely that the numbers arrayed against them were far more, and even great power can not victor against overwhelming numbers. So I'd figure they had a mighty army. None of this is shown, and might be thrown in with the whole thing of hair-dying, but it gives a serious light to Zeal, making it more of an ancient and hallowed things of ancientry.

VERY well said, Daniel!

And yes, that's what I was about to say.  Not that CuteLucca is the official authority on these characters' clothes, but when she began that Schala sketch, she mentioned that she would have Schala "wearing a white lacy underdress, which you will only see the collar of."

Which also points just a bit to the initial point of this thread, Schala & Lavos going at it for a LONG time...  Schala's original outfit has been basically torn to shreds in her struggle against Lavos, and she's left with nothin' but her skivvies here. =P

I can just imagine Serge being like "WOO! Take it off!"

Anyway, as for this dying bullcrap, NO! Japanese entertainment is full of unnatural, natural, hair colors. Why should Zeal be different? Even if it wasn't magical, Zeal is arrogant enough to take the less practical answers. Why dye our hair to flaunt our magical power, when we can use our magical power to flaunt itself? Also, yea. Maidens that get absorbed by big demonic monsters tend to get their hair changed for some reason. Like Baten Kaitos, there was this one princess (Forgot her name again) who was absorbed by Malpercio, and when she was freed and purified from Malpercio's control, her hair changed from white, to blue.

We're trying to find an answer that doesn't include the words "Japanese entertainment" or "Akira Toriyama." ;)

Yup.

And Schala's blondeness not being an effect of Lavos is proved by Kid's existence, who is a clone of Schala.

I agree thoroughly with Daniel. Actually, we see part of that Army of Zeal: two guards in front of the Blackbird and many more inside the Ocean Palace. Also all those magical beasts might be part of different divisions of their army.
Ít is obvious that rpgs worlds are terribly underpopulated (or are very small), what leads us to the assumption that in rpgs we are only allowed to visit the "significant" cities... significant for the plot. This is a concept familiar for the one of us who create strategy game scenarios

Lastly: even if Schala's purple hair colour came from a magical spell, it wouldn't stop being a dye. A magical dye, but a dye nonetheless. Ever seen Sailor Moon? Magical Make-Up anyone?

Not necessarily, Kid may have been the exact clone of Schala at THAT PRESENT TIME. i.e, when she was blonde.

Hair color is a genetical trait. Hence you would need to change Schalas genes intently to turn her blonde. And still, she wouldn't turn blond by changing her genes, only her clones.

Lavos probably could change his genes... but such alteration should be intent.
And i don't see why Lavos would do that, unless he likes blondes :D
