Part V: Lavos and the Threat to the Entity[edit]

  • B NOTE: What follow are notes recovered from Melchior's villa circa 1005AG. I have left them unedited out of respect for my colleague, though you will notice an erratic pattern in his writing given that these were hastily scribbled.

The idea of an "Entity" I had proposed in the "Compendium Esoterica" proved more correct than I could have fathomed! Furthermore, if the machine speaks true, the Entity is responsible for the Time Gates and not Lavos. But what could it all mean? I doubt we will even know the true purpose of the fight against Lavos until after we defeat it, but here is some conjecture.

Lavos destroys life. Over time, it will render the planet uninhabitable.

Entity needs the planet to be habitable, and needs life to fulfill its desire for community.

No life on the planet, no community. The Entity cannot create life out of thin air; it can only generate intelligence comparable to its own. If all Bodies disappear, there will be no way for the Souls to interact with the physical world.

What of "ghosts?" Could the Entity still not interact with the world through them? Firstly, Lavos' effect on "ghosts" is unknown. Secondly, "ghosts" may inhibit the Entity in some way by keeping their Souls to themselves, and not relinquishing them to the Entity. Maybe the individual Soul is enriched through worldly experience, but the Entity as a whole cannot benefit until the Soul merges with it again.

Dead world = dead Entity, depending on how you define "dead." Certainly the Entity would not want to be cooped up in the Shadow Realm alone again. It may very well do anything to avoid this.
