Ayla is the fearsome, strong warrior chief of prehistory. Ayla assumed the title of Chief of [[Ioka]] thanks to her strength, and she led her people in battle with the [[Reptites]] for supremacy. A warrior of her tribe named [[Kino]] did not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders. When the celebration ended and the party fell aleep, he stole their [[Gate Key]] and ran for the [[Forest Maze]]. Ayla's nobly aided Crono's search for the key, while Kino admitted that he only took it out of jealousy -- and that he loves Ayla and was worried that she would choose Crono over him. Ayla punched him and told him that she preferred him over Crono; he apologized but admitted that [[Azala]] and the Reptites stole the Gate Key. Crono and Ayla then defeated [[Nizbel]] and retrieved the Key.

Ayla gave Crono [[Dreamstone]], which was necessary to forge the [[Masamune]]. When [[Laruba]] village was attacked after Crono's return to her era, she agreed to join Crono's party permanently. Though Ayla's vocabulary as an early human is limited, her intellect is keen and her humanity passionate and inquisitive. She lives with respect to the "law of earth" -- that the strong live and the weak die. Because she predates contact with the [[Frozen Flame]], she cannot use magic. She is possibly bisexual, as she notes to Lucca that she likes strong people, whether men or women (Lucca replies that she's not in to that sort of thing). Censors removed this exchange in the American release. Ayla also expressed concern over the small size of [[Marle]]'s breasts, worrying that they weren't sufficient to give milk to children; this exchange was also censored. Ayla returned to 65000000 B.C. after the defeat of Lavos and married Kino with a Dreamstone ring.

Ayla's origins are unknown, though she may be a descendant of [[Leah]]. Ayla assumed the title of Chief of [[Ioka Village]], as she the strongest warrior in the tribe. Her people have been battling the [[Reptites]] for supremacy, so whenever she sees one, her first instinct is "Ayla beat!" Because of this, when she sees [[Crono]] and his party assaulted by the reptilian beings at the foot of the [[Mystic Mountain]], Ayla's first instinct is to drive them all away. Then, when Crono and his friends join the fray, Ayla is mightily impressed by their strength, and invites them to feast with her tribe to celebrate their victory. A warrior of her tribe, [[Kino]], does not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders, and so when the celebration ends and the party is asleep, he steals their [[Gate Key]] and runs for the [[Forest Maze]]. Ayla's nobility prompts her to aid Crono in recovering the Key, but when they reach the Maze and corner him, Kino admits that he only took it out of jealousy, that he loves Ayla and was worried that she would choose Crono over him unless Kino did something. Once Ayla hits him over the head (literally) with the fact that she loves him, not Crono, he apologizes, but admits that the Key was stolen by [[Azala]] and the Reptites.

Ayla helps your group by giving them the [[Dreamstone]], which is necessary to forge the [[Masamune]]. Later, when the [[Laruba Village]] is attacked on your second return to her era, she agrees to join your party permanently. Ayla can always be trusted to take the most complicated of ideas and put them in the simplest possible terms; she has a limited vocabulary, but is highly intelligent for a cavewoman. She cannot use magic; the explanation given by [[Spekkio]] is that magic did not exist in her time. Researching this results in interpreting Spekkio's message to mean that her species has not been evolved through the [[Frozen Flame]] and [[Lavos]] yet due to contact in [[3,000,000 B.C.]], and she thusly does not possess the biological capacity for magic.

A warrior of her tribe named Kino did not understand why his Chief would throw a feast for outsiders.
