The Mammon Machine was designed and built by Melchior, one of the three Gurus, as a method of extracting immense quantities of energy from Lavos. While some fears were expressed in its initial constructions, it was completed and stationed in Zeal Palace. Further research revealed that human immortality could be achieved in the event that the Mammon Machine were moved to an Ocean Palace in order to be closer to Lavos. The resulting move and activation caused the Ocean Palace Incident, and scattered the Gurus across time. In the Keystone Timelines, Melchior gave Crono the Red Knife in order to stop the Incident, but plunging it into the machine had no effect. Later, it would appear in the Black Omen as a boss that harnessed energy.
