Chrono Cross is interesting in that it lists height and weight for all its characters. They can be viewed from the status screen, and can be found in our Characters (Chrono Cross) encyclopedia. It was simple to calculate their body mass index, a way of estimating body fat based on these traits. The Japanese standard for underweight is a BMI of less than 18.5. Who falls into this unhealthy category?
After running some calculations, the list goes (humans only, of course):
- Miki: 14.0
- Luccia: 14.3
- Leena: 15.5
- Nikki: 15.6
- Steena: 16.2
- Riddel: 16.3
- Kid: 16.5
- Van: 17.8
- Pierre: 18.1
- Radius: 18.1
- Marcy: 18.2
- Norris: 19.7
- Guile: 19.8
- Orlha: 19.8
- Korcha: 19.9
- Serge: 20.0
- Glenn: 20.8
- Doc: 21.6
- Fargo: 22.1
- Karsh: 22.2
- Sneff: 22.4
- Mel: 22.7
- Macha: 24.2
- Viper: 24.3
- Zoah: 25.4
- Zappa: 27.5
- Leah: 29.7
- Greco: 30.5
- Orcha: 31.8
A whopping 38% of the human cast of Chrono Cross is underweight. Being overweight is correlated with health issues, but many people fail to realize that being underweight is also very seriously correlated with health problems. There's also the issue of eating disorders and unfair, unrealistic standards of beauty promoted in the world, most notably in the fashion and modeling industries. It's troubling that Chrono Cross and other games so readily feature underweight (and in the case several of the females, downright emaciated) characters.
