65000000 B.C. is a prehistoric land, composed of one continent and under battle for control by the Reptites and Apes. Dinosaurs and other ancient monsters roam the land, and are hunted by tribespeople from the human settlements Ioka and Laruba. The leader of the effort against the Reptites is Ayla, the most incredible fighter alive, while Azala, a telepathic, highly advanced Reptite controls the opposition, and is able to employ the various monsters of this era in her cause. 65000000 B.C. is thus an amalgation of the Pleistocene Epoch and the Mesozoic Era in our own history; within the former, humans began to reach a fully evolved state, and the latter witnessed the rise and fall of the dinosaurs, made extinct in this case by Lavos, who appears before his fall in the form of a Red Star seen atop the Dactyl Nest and Tyrano Lair in the distant sky. Azala prophesied the fall of Lavos and the onslaught of an Ice Age that would result in the extinction of the Reptites; she was correct, though another dimension exists in which Lavos never fell, and the Reptites were able to defeat the humans.
Crono's party makes three required trips to this era; the first involves obtaining Dreamstone from Ayla by defeating her in a competition to drink Poi soup. The party fell victim to a betrayal by Kino and a subsequent Reptite raid on the items he stole; this necessitated a venture to the Reptite Lair to retrieve the Gate Key, which was stolen. Later, after the Battle with Magus, the party is thrown to this era and it is learned that the Reptites have struck Laruba and have captured several humans for food. Ayla and the party then journey to the Tyrano Lair by way of Dactyls and defeat Azala; Lavos here lands, and the party enters 12000 B.C. in the Lair Ruins. Lastly, the party comes to this era to deposit the Sun Stone for recharging as part of the Sun Stone sidequest. After the fall of Lavos, the villagers of Ioka voice their confusion about the cold weather and worry for the future.

Name Origin
65000000 B.C. was probably chosen for this era because it is the date given by Luis Alvarez, a famous researcher, as the rough estimate of the Cretaceous extinction, when a large meteorite is theorized to have landed at the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and caused the extinction of numerous animals.
