General Information

Chrono Trigger

Full Name: Azala
Japanese Name: アザラ Azarla
Age: Indeterminate
Species: Reptite
Home Time: 65000000 B.C.
Home Area: Reptite Lair, Tyrano Lair

Azala, the infamous leader of the Reptites, is the principal villain of the prehistoric age and a very intelligent and formidable opponent. She leads the entire Reptite race from atop the Tyrano Lair, a fortress constructed south of glowing lava beds, and also occupies time at an encampment within a cave south of Ioka. Besides holding the keys to the BlackTyrano, the tools that denote her reign include telekinetic (and perhaps, telepathic) powers, and a marked intellect. Leading war against the Apes due to their mental inferiority, she commands, in addition to Reptites and their variations, the various savage animals that roam the land. Her personal bodyguard is a massive dino called Nizbel, who also displays a level of intelligence above that of the other animals and Apes. In this regard, she is only matched by the power of the Larubans' control of the Dactyls.

The details of how Azala came to power and acquired her telekinetic prowess are unknown, and complicate the definition of the Reptite race. Also unexplained is the motive for going to war with the Apes; whatever the offense, Ayla notes that Azala intends to destroy both significant caveman encampments. Her character is worthy of this aim, as she displays not only the thoughtful capacity to lead, but the pride associated with the title of head of state - as well as intolerance for enemies, evidenced in the confrontation in the Reptite Lair. Azala later became aware of Lavos's impending landing, and perhaps the fate of her race as well. Many hold that her utterance, "Red star, FALL!" intended to mean that she summoned Lavos, but this is a misconception, as Azala only recently learned of Lavos's approach, and had lost the battle to the Apes (ensuring that they would inherit the planet). The cry was thus more of a bitter forecast of future hardships for her bipedal opposites, as the astronomical omen had already signaled the end of her own race. Prideful to the very end and indignant at her defeat, Azala declined to be saved from the Tyrano Lair's destruction, and wisely predicted that the world's future was in jeopardy due to the arrival of the red star. She perished in the destruction of her fortress.

Chrono Cross

Azala's commanding ability is perhaps confirmed in Chrono Cross, as in the Reptite Dimension (in which Lavos did not fall), the Reptites eventually subdued the Apes and created their own civilization.

Name Origin

Azala means home in the Basque language, but this is probably meaningless coincidence.
