Pip is the latest lab experiment of Luccia, a creature that can evolve from combat experience. Pip possessed a working intellect and grasp of language after his creation, and only desired to see more of the world after being pent up in the lab. He was released by Serge on the night of the infiltration of Viper Manor, and made his way to the S.S. Invincible to broaden his horizons. Serge later found him there during the attack by the Ghost Ship; Pip joined the party, and began evolving. After Serge became Lynx, Pip joined the party immediately once more, noting that it's "the inside that counts".

Chrono Cross HD Remaster Twitter bio: Pip - "Curious Evolutionary Guinea Pig" A completely new kind of monster created by Luccia. It is named "Tsumaru" because it likes to "get stuck" in something. Perhaps because he has been in a cage since his birth in the laboratory of Viper Manor, he has a strong longing for the outside world and dreams of someday sailing out to the great ocean. Despite its cute appearance, it has unfathomable power, and can evolve into a new form as it gains experience in battles.

Pip's Mechanics

Evolving

Pip has five forms aside from the original. They include the Devil, Angel, Archdevil, Archangel, and Holy Beast forms. The Angels have higher magic, while the Devils have higher physical strength. To evolve towards the Angel side, use Green, White, and Blue Elements in battle. Alternatively, for the Devil side, use Red, Yellow, and Black Elements. Whichever Element is used most in battles will become his new Innate. He also must gain a Star to evolve; if he is not fully evolved and is still at level 99, he cannot advance.

Element Grid Glitch

Pip's character has a glitch where even if he evolves to Holy Beast or an Arch form, he loses the last two slots in his Element Grid if the Playstation console is turned off. This can be counteracted in two ways. Firstly, one can simply never turn off the Playstation. This can burn the disc, however. Secondly, one can keep two save files; one with a normal game and evolved Pip, and one with a Pip almost ready to evolve. When you boot up, load up the unevolved Pip game first, evolve him, and then load up the real game. Pip's new Element Grid will carry over. This can be done with different evolved forms to make a larger than normal Element Grid (Archangel has the largest).

Element Glitch

Pip is quite the little glitch factory, but here's a tidbit that most don't know: It is possible to have innate-only Elements such as FullRevival and PhysNegate on a Pip that is of a completely different elemental! To do this, you must get Pip to evolve to the the color you desire the innate Elements of, then place them on his grid in a spot you won't be moving them from. Then, simply evolve him again! This lets you have a total of three different colors of innate-only elements, and up to six summons! Warning: Using Auto-Allocate on Pip or the entire party undoes this, removing the elements from his grid!

Name Origin

In the Ultimania developer interviews, developers joke that Pip is named "packed" in Japanese as a pun on how much content and characters they were trying to cram into Chrono Cross.
