To parallel in brighter light my hatred in the Hate thread, there is nothing so uniquely satisfying and empowering as being able to converse with people who are scientifically literate. The conversations which arise, the ideas and the proposals...it's delicious. It's something that I crave, and I have never long kept a friend who did not maintain a fixture of science in the realm of their psyche.
I have the rather philosophically conventional but popularly uncommon view that human cognitive intelligence builds outward from the core layers which concern the natural sciences and their mathematical manipulation. In other words, if you learn about subjects in physics, chemistry, biology, meteorology, seismology, astronomy...and develop the basic mathematical fluency to apply and manipulate your understanding...if you do this, then all the rest falls into place. The arts and humanities must follow scientific literacy. They cannot precede it. But if you move in the right order, from physics, to chemistry, to biology, to psychology, to sociology, to music...you will truly know your place in the universe, and that is a powerful and liberating thing to know.
I meet people like that from time to time, and am delighted by them. Some of you are people like that, and I suppose that's why I still hang around this place. Such individuals are humanity's most redeeming quality. It is a treasure to know them and an honor to walk among them. I love it.
