In Defense of Ted Woolsey
« on: October 02, 2005, 07:30:36 am »
Too many people bashing his translation of Chrono Trigger,
without much of a clue of what they're talking about in the
first place.

I'd advise anyone who thinks ill of Woolsey to read
this:

http://tomato.fobby.net/old/woolsey.php

It's written by a man who is currently a proffesional
translator working at FUNimation, Inc., not to mention
having done translation work on many important
ROM translation projects, such as Live-a-Live.

*cough*
(waits for the inevitable retort from people who
think they know better)

You seem to like defending people a lot. Like your other thread, will you collapse to the pressure of the learned Chrono Compendium masters? Well, your link proved that Ninty USA sucks

A couple of comments.

BurningZepplin: Please, stop treating these threads as if they're battles of life and death. That's a very Nightmare-ish quality that he's working on...

Alfador, for one thing you need to argue your point with more maturity. Stop acting like you're purposefully trying to start up some sort of e-brawl every time you post something you think is, "controversial." It's just dumb

I personally have no beef with Woolsey...I can symphathize with the lack of time, and we're all human. Plus, I think he did a better job translating FFVI than what the literal translation is.

I am referring to the manner which you jump at people on certain threads, and turn it into a mini battle...which isn't happening so much now, but it did happen a lot in your earlier posts.

I'm sorry if I've offended you; I really didn't mean to   .

Hey it's all right. It was just because I was new, and really didn't know anybody.

I do think Ted Woolsey is criticized excessively. He boldly navigated the rapids of Japanese idioms, Nintendo of America's content limitations and censorship, and the fact that the English version of the game couldn't contain the same amount of content, word for word, as the Japanese version. We blame him for replacing the Japanese idioms with American English ones. We blame him for dumbing down the content. We blame him for confusing or leaving out altogether some of the story's key ideas. Blame, blame, blame...it becomes the posh thing to do, and I think the issues tend to get lost in that. There probably is some room to question some of the guy's stylistic choices, but on the whole I think Mr. Woolsey performed very well within the limitations he had to work with.

Yeah, we should blame NOA! Better yet, blame America!

Well said. I really don't think we should be laying anymore blame. I personally am glad that I discovered Chrono Trigger in the language that I know the best. We forget...without Woolsey's translation, we wouldn't be here (well, most of us anyways.), discussing how it could be better  :D .

Kazuki: Well said. =)

I guess I was kinda in e-brawl mode back there.
Really sorry about that...

We should be blaming the english language for taking up so much space on the cart. We would have been fine if it wasn't for that.

Yeah, the only people I see blaming Ted for that crap are n00bs. It's easy to point the finger at him because it says "TRANSLATOR: TED WOOSLEY" in-game.

I like that we got a translation of so many of those delightful games, but I still hate that we got butchered versions of them. It's like, would the Mona Lisa be the same if it was just her eye and the rest was covered up. Sure, it might still be a work of art...but it's not what was intended to be seen by the artist. I mean, Ted's said (hey, that's fun to say!) that he had to chop out half of the CT script for Khrist's sake!

It's not all Ted's fault. There are time restraints, cart limitations, and censorship issues. But some things are Woosleyisms, you can't argue that. The translations were more localizations...I'm more of a purist. Sue me.

Netiquette is something that everyone should be required to learn.

Frankly I'm shocked that this forum expanded as much as it did over the time I've been a member. I've mostly lurked, but I'm pleased to see a CT-based forum thrive so long after any new games in the series.
