Chrono Trigger Complete[edit]
This Chrono Trigger updates the script of this wonderful game to modern standards, while keeping the nuanced but lovable translation and characteristics of the original script.
The hack combines the loved, quirky translation of the original SNES version, with the more extended script of the DS version, to create the best Chrono Trigger version. Compared, as well, with the Japanese original, for many lines where meanings were initially lost (mostly funny lines from era to era, but also some… surprises).
Apart from that, scenes were added that add a bit more interaction between the characters and NPCs (Lucca and Melchior, for instance). Nothing major, but small things here and there to make the journey more worthwhile, and explore having different characters in your party.
Last, and bigger in scope, more direct references to Chrono Cross story; the Frozen Flame was added as an element in Zeal, and a possibility of what could have happened with Schala, Zeal, the Flame, Dreamstone, the Mammon Machine, and the Gurus. Mostly Chrono Compendium based, but also a bit of the author’s own (original-material based) theory-crafting. Look out for the references, and figure out how the Ocean Palace incident and the fall of Zeal are explained in this version!
The core gameplay is kept from the SNES original, with mostly SNES original names. No extra content from the DS version added.
Chrono Trigger +[edit]
by ThegreatBen. This hack adds a ton of cut content back into the game, allows access to previously unexplorable areas, fixes some bugs and offers some options to remove the linearity from the game. Full list of changes in the readme.
In addition 1999 is fully explorable and offers tons of stuff to do. As well as more Easter eggs and quality of life improvements.
More stuff carries over like names money, fair prizes and cats.
The optional patches are explained in the readme.
Human Glenn is almost here!

Enhansa Edition[edit]
by inuksuk
Enhansa Edition is a mod of Chrono Trigger that aims to improve the battle system by giving the player more choices about how to grow and gear your character. The inspiration for the mod was, “What if Hypno Wave was actually useful?” and from there it spiraled out of control to rewriting enemy AI, redesigning items and equipment, redesigning Techs, and more. There is a much greater emphasis on status effects in battle, with full functionality restored to unused statuses and many new ways to apply them.
This is not a “difficulty hack”. That is to say, the game has not been made frustratingly difficult on purpose. The mod is certainly more difficult than vanilla Chrono Trigger; it was a game originally designed for children, after all. In redesigning the battle mechanics, the interest is in increasing the number of options that the player has to consider. If you’re being challenged by a fight, step back and carefully evaluate your options.
Improving on Chrono Trigger is a daunting task. The original game gets so many things right. A goal was to keep the quick pace of combat from the original while still presenting challenges for the player to overcome. Thank you for playing and enjoy!

Schala Edition[edit]
by Fauntleroy
This hack alters events of the game so that Schala of Zeal is rescued as part of the normal course of events. Schala remains part of the game world through the rest of the story and can be interacted with regularly.
Other changes include: an expanded version of the original Ted Woolsey translation, new items and Techs, new enemies and dungeons, new locations and NPCs, new shops and treasures, and a lot of surprises along the way. More alterations are explained in the readme.
Versions 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 of this hack were beta releases previewed for and playtested by members of the Chrono Compendium community. Thank you to everyone who participated, as this project would not exist without you.
Please note: this hack does include the New Game+ feature, despite what was stated in one of the reviews for the project. Feel free to contact the hack’s author if you encounter bugs. Thank you.

Fixes or Types[edit]
6 Letter Name Patch[edit]
- 6-Letter Names Patch, by Mauron, Vehek, JLukas, justin3009; apply to unheadered ROM
Chrono Trigger 1.01[edit]
- Chrono Trigger 1.01, a hack by The Fang designed for low-level games, with several other tweaks.
For details check out the Readme file, but here are some key features:
- Some dialogue changes and most tech descriptions use a compromise of community sources, paraphrasing, and the original text (NA).
- The “6-Letter Name” and “CronoNick” patches have been applied. [see Readme file]
- Certain enemies are challenging, but most normal enemies are still easy.
- It’s no longer Uncle Sam mode. $ rewards have been reduced significantly.
- This hack is designed with no-levels and low-levels games in mind, so LLGs can be completed legitimately.
- A wallet is hidden in Porre, if you want to play a NLG. Take a few rides on the ferry to reveal it.
- Most of Spekkio’s forms can still be reached, even at low levels.
- The Octorider enemy makes an appearance in NG+.
- All of your Fair stuff carries over to NG+.
- Some SPC songs from the pre-release game have been added, without having to replace existing ones.
- There are now two versions of Magus (the castle fight). One is for NLGs, LLGs, and average Normal games, and the other is intended for NG+ levels.
- Some scripted treasures have been hidden in places, to give the game a little bit more randomness.
- The final fight with Lavos can be replayed after you lose that fight, IF you are at low levels, and also as a bonus for NG+ playthroughs of this hack.

Chrono Trigger: Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch[edit]
by Chronosplit. This patch is geared towards fixing bugs and patching up script inconsistencies or censorship. The aim is to preserve the original translation while generally improving the game as a whole.
- Completely decapitalized names in dialogue.
- No more indentation of normal dialogue in textboxes.
- MSU-1 compatibility!
- Fixes to gameplay bugs, such as Targeting AI.
- You can now enter names smaller than the maximum amount of characters without issue.
- Restoration of alcohol, prayer, entities, you name it!
- Magus is now known as The Fiendlord by NPCs in 1000AD and 600AD, and Mystics are now Fiends.
- Minor restoration of points Chrono Cross brings up that were present in the original, just not in the localization.
If you have been playing previous editions before the version number says “rebuilt” or are using a save from elsewhere such as an unpatched game, listen up: saves made after Mystic Mountain is first visited that did not use the CronoNick patch are not compatible, as the game will glitch out when viewing Falcon Hit’s description or some of Ayla’s lines. Saves between current patch versions are 100% compatible.
This was originally an addendum to Chrono Trigger’s already existing dialogue related bugfix patch. There are still many fixes from here contained within.
Chrono Trigger Soundtrack Expansion[edit]
by PowerPanda
Chrono Trigger’s soundtrack is widely acclaimed as one of the best of all time. However, the songs you hear in the game are not the complete soundtrack. There are actually 12 more songs that are part of Chrono Trigger’s larger identity.
Songs from the OST
- Frog’s Theme (With Intro)
- Singing Mountain
- Battle 2
Songs from the PSX and DS re-releases
- A Meeting with Destiny
- One Sunny Day When We Met
- Scattering Blossoms
- A Time to Rest -After the Battle-
Songs from the Pre-Release cartridge
- Keeper’s Dome
- Ascend to the Light
- Boss Battle 3
- Battle 1 Rough
And finally, songs that exist only as data chunks in the rom
- Alarming Crisis
- Rat-A-Tat-Tat It’s… Mitsuda
This patch expands the soundtrack of the SNES game to include all 12 songs. For the 5 songs that were never on a Super Nintendo cartridge, small re-arrangements have been made to recreate the music on the SNES sound chip. There are no tricks going on here; all music that you hear is actually playing through the SNES sound engine, with no MSU-1 audio required.
There are 6 versions of the patch included. One is the standard patch which you can add to an unmodified rom. One is a data only patch for romhackers that adds the new music, but does not place it anywhere in the rom. The other 4 are addendum patches that allow you to add the Soundtrack Expansion to other popular romhacks, including Enhansa Edition, 2 versions of the Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch, and Chrono Trigger+.

Old Write-up and Version
The Chrono Trigger soundtrack has 2 famously unused pieces of music that are included in the ROM, and on the official soundtrack. The pieces are “Battle 2″ and “Singing Mountain.” Nobody knows where “Battle 2″ was supposed to play, but “Singing Mountain” was the theme for a cut bonus dungeon in Pre-History. Both songs can be heard on The Cutting Room Floor website, here: https://tcrf.net/Chrono_Trigger_(SNES)#Unused_Music
This minimalist patch inserts both songs into appropriate places in the rom.
- Battle 2 - Used as a boss battle theme for the 4 Lavos Spawns.
- Singing Mountain - Used as the background music for Mt. Woe and Death Peak.
Enemy Drops Overhaul[edit]
By Cthulhu88. This hack attempts to solve one of Chrono Trigger’s main flaws post Magus, the need to have Ayla in your party as to obtain every unique/special item through Charm.
Changes
Techs:
- Charm no longer steals, instead it’s now a single target tech with a 80% chance of inflicting Stop to the target.
- Twin Charm also no longer steals, instead it’s now a single target tech that will reduce a target’s current HP by half and then inflict Confuse to the target. Targets immune to Magus’ Blackhole are also immune to this tech.
Items:
- Reworked the Charm Top accessory into “Crown”. Crown is a Marle only accessory that grants her “Royal Power”. Royal Power grants her damage increase to all offensive abilities (same as PrismSpecs), MP regeneration during battle, Auto-Shield and Auto-Barrier.
Enemy Drops:
Unique and special charmed items will now drop as a standard item drop upon defeating the enemy. Removed consumable items from enemy drops (with the exception of bosses). You will now have to keep buying those items instead of getting an infinite flow of them. Non-consumable items that are purchasable will not drop from enemies (with the exception of bosses). Example being the charmed weapons from Mt. Woe. Consumable items that are not purchasable (Lapis, Shield and Barrier) will drop from certain enemies starting at the Ocean Palace. Elixir and MegaElixir will not drop from enemies (with the exception of bosses). Moved Gold Stud from Flyclops to both Dalton and Dalton Plus. Moved Gold Erng from Synchrite to Atropos XR. Moved Nova Armor from Goon to Mega Mutant (both Upper and Lower). Removed MuscleRing from Incognito.
Cross Assembling
This hack is compatible with Chrono Trigger: Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch, but you will need to cross assemble the code into the ROM.
To do that, follow these steps:
Download bass v14 and put bass.exe into the “src” folder. (Optional) Download the checksum calculator and put checksum.exe into the “src” folder. (Optional) Download flips and put flips.exe into the “src” folder. Open make.bat with a text editor and set DEFINE. EX for Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch or any other compatible ExHiROM hack and CATFOOD for the extra feature described below. Set INPUT to the name of your ROM. Default is “Chrono Trigger (USA).sfc”. Save make.bat and run it. Once done, your new cross-assembled ROM will be chrono_drops.sfc.
Extras
As an extra, some changes to the cat food rewards from Norstein Bekkler’s Tent of Horrors were added. These changes are not included within the BPS patch, you will need to follow the steps above and cross-assemble it. Use CATFOOD in DEFINE.
These are the changes:
- Guessing Game: From 2 ounces to 10 ounces.
- Copycat Game: From 10 ounces to 50 ounces.
- Beanbag Throw Game: From 25 ounces to 100 ounces.
Source Code
- main.asm: Main source file, mostly asm. Not recommended to mess with.
- charm.inc: Contains the changes to Charm, Twin Charm and Charm Top. Feel free to adjust them to your liking.
- drops.inc: Contains the enemy drops. Feel free to adjust them to your liking.
- catfood.inc: Contains the changes to the cat food rewards. Feel free to adjust them to your liking
Master Quest[edit]
by MSR04. This hack for Chrono Trigger brings in new content as well as an increased difficulty, if you’re into that sort of thing! Here are a few of the changes:
The unused songs Battle 2 and Singing Mountain are included in this hack, and you’ll be bound to here them at least once! Some palettes of characters are changed to match their official artwork, like Magus, Flea, Dalton and Heckran. (These aren’t all the palette changes, just a few.) References to Chrono Cross are added. Some dialogue is changed to be less inconsistent with the original Japanese version, although Frog still speaks in his unusual way.
If you don’t want a harder difficulty, you can choose the Jr. version of this hack that keeps all the changes but no increased difficulty.
No Music[edit]
If you prefer listening to other music while you play, this is your ticket.
Respecting Sprites[edit]
by Mauron. Respecting Sprites is hack that causes Chrono Trigger to consistently use sprite palette data. Originally menus would ignore the sprite palette data, instead loading the palette based on the PC index (so Crono was always using palette 0, for example). It also sometimes loaded sprites using a palette pointer, and at others palette index * palette size.
This hack was tested on the original game, but should be compatible with any hack that does not rely on that inconsistent behavior. It will mostly benefit hackers looking to alter sprite data.
Version 1.1:
- Fixed two issues that appeared later in game or in New Game+
- Added support for the Japanese ROM
Start with Marle Patch[edit]
- Start with Marle patch by Notthisguy; skips the whole process of bumping into Marle at the Fair.
Time Menu Update[edit]
by chronosplit. This patch updates the time selection menu seen when you warp to another time period in the Epoch to terms seen in later translation scripts. Dark Ages is now Antiquity, and Prehistoric is now Prehistory. No text has been updated so anyone making their own hack may use this without fear, just the image. This is the same one used in the Bugfix and Uncensoring Patch.
This does not update anything else in the game, just the one menu.
